Open blog and intellectual property? Funding for final thesis? How to choose an academic advisor?

Lopputyöhön liittyvää pohdintaa

Questions on academic's technical side...

Blog has a great amount of positive sides in it: sharing the feelings, sharing the process, getting comments from advisor and others, making academic community around involved. But I'll focus on the possible risks:

Intellectual property and the open blog

- ideas cannot be copyrighted, only ready works
- how to prevent idea theft? how to make sure i will be credited for my own work and no one else?
- how to avoid being plagiarised on?
- what can be published, what not?
- what to tell to advisor, what to leave for future research?
- can open communications actually credit me instead of losing credits?
- what material is suitable to publish, what is not?
- how to ensure maximal distribution of the completed final thesis?

can be published without problems:
+ generic research related technical texts like this
+ calendar, where going

might be harmful to publish:
- hypothesis
- research plan
- results of personal discussions (privacy, findings)
- all of the bibiography
- one paragraph summary of books and research materials
- progress overview with findings and what's for next to do

probably harmful to publish:
- all of the text
- research findings while in progress
- exact numeric data and acquire process

Choosing advisor(s)

- one or two? i read some regulations say two is the amount, but i only see one for masters. is this cost question? is it of laziness? no feel for need for two?
- advisor contact can be very valuable for the future and can yield more work and research team membership
- what kind of advisor to choose? university professor? artist? free research laboratory/thinktank member? own faculty member? industry? researcher from rich lab? international or national?
- each choice has different pros, cons and opportunities
- different combinations yield different kind of help:
* one academic and one artist/industry?
* one international academic contact, one own faculty?
* one think tank, one international?
* one think tank, one artist?
- what kind of advisor choices will help my future plans?
- how much freedom do i have with choosing advisor, is it up to me, negotiable or up to academic unit alone?
- if i get to choose only on, which profile is most important?
- what is the role of advisor? academic cheerleader, substantial library, criticizer or out-of-box thinker which brings fresh thoughts to process? which role is most important when choices will be made?
- how inspiring personality is the possible advisor?
- how do our interpersonal chemistry work together?
- is the advisor college, superior, god, equal, minor or friend? what is my desired status? what is the advisor's?

Funding

- do i need extra funding than my own income for the thesis?
- are there running costs? what causes the expenses?
- how am i going to publish the thesis? a print at the university or a real book.. ?
- what about the living costs?
- do i have time to work on the thesis along my other hurries?
- the such costs as meeting an advisor in a cafe or going out to eat?
- how much is it possible to get funding for the final thesis?
- who can give the funding?
- when to apply? or how to get it?
- why not apply? why apply?
